In what I’m labeling as AppSumo Gate, etailer Appsumo upset quite a lot of people when their latest offered slammed Michael J Fox for his disease, Parkinsons.
In an attempt at “humour” to sell a wallet sized phone tripod, AppSumo claimed that a tripod would avoid the sort of camera shake has Michael J Fox been behind the lens.
The copy was fairly quickly edited with the “joke” removed after the product manufacturer realised what had been said.
But such is the beast of social media, that the legend of AppSumo Gate, lives on in over 109 comments, and of course this blog post…
The Power Of Social Media:
Then some “kind” soul, suggested via the comments, that AppSumo should put their money where their apology is, and donate to the MJ FOx charity which is battling with research against the Parkinson’s disease.
What annoys me personally, is the 4 out 8 people (50%) who did not think that a charity donation was “useful”.
What the heck are these people smoking? How self centred can you be to think that such a suggestion in a “store” was not helpful to “THEM”?
However AppSumo themselves saw the light… and seized the PR opportunity
As a copywriter, it serves to remind me how careful we have to be with the power of our words.
And also how fickle people are with their different tastes.
And how 50% of an audience can be so selfish to ACTIVELY make the effort to vote that a charitable donation was a bad idea.
