What does a dancing bear have to do with a slapping Google?

OK well I don’t think any one can touch the guys for their bear disco dancing ;-) but what about the Google Goggles software. The software that claims it can prevent Google Slap on your PPC AdWords campaigns, increase your quality score and hence lower your PPC rates and maybe even abolish the Google stupid tax on your AdWords PPC campaigns

So what is Google Goggles and quality score all about?

Strangely it is about helping the Google search engine to provide the best results for the searcher. Which in the case of Adwords Pay Per Click (PPC), also extends to the side adverts.

So why is quality score important?

Well in an ideal world every web page would be fantastic and relevent and Gogoles job of finding the best content would be easy.
But the Internet is a mish mash of literally billions of pages, not all created equal or even with the same good intentions. So before Google can “recommend” a website, or even an Adsense advert, Google needs to access which deserve to be at the top of the display queue.

Adsense is Google’s version of PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising, where paid adverts are shown next to the organic search results.

Most business owners would imagine you can just pay for an advert and a position and it would be done and dusted. But NO not with Google.

Firstly it is an “AUCTION” so the highest bidder will get preferential treatment, but subject to the quality of what you offer. So if you offer less quality, you ave to pay more per bid, to win the same keyword auction. This is lovingly referred to as the Google Stupid Tax by Mr X, a grey hat adsense consultant to blue chip corporates, who charges in excess of $10,000 per half day for SEO and PPC consultation.

So if you want to pay less per PPC bid, your landing page and website just needs to be of a better quality.

If your site is totally unrelated to the keyword search, then almost no amount of money will get your adverts displayed. Google just don’t want to show adverts leading to irrelevant content.

So “Google Goggles” is a software tool for seeing what Google will see and telling you if you have made any errors before Google gets to slap you down.

Because Google can seem to be quite unforgiving for quite a long time. Once they think you are no good, they seem to tar you with that brush. People are now even talking about ditching domain names which have been rated badly. Not even blacklisted, but those with just a low quality score.

Google Goggles will analyse your site and provide some sliders for how well it does in each key area. A PDF remedy report is then generated. IMHO the report is a bit vague and I don’t imagine many people will bother to remedy their sites. But at least they’ll know which keywords they have a chance of getting, and more importantly, which keywords they have no chance (aka expensive bid price) of getting.

The point is, that trying for keywords you have no right to, get you a black mark which is hard to shrug off. It affects your entire campaign price, including on your good words, and your advertisers “reputation”.
