Steve Jobs (Apple) dies of Cancer aged 56

You’ve probably already read it 100 times. Steve Jobs is dead.

What more could I possibly say? Well death should really be a celebration of life, so let’s give that a go!

It’s strange when the death of someone you don’t even know, I never even spoke to the man in the phone, dies and you feel sad.

Well it’s called celebrity, or icon if you prefer, and it is Steve Jobs legacy that his death has had an impact on so many people.

I doubt I will achieve anything like that by the time I die, other than a few “about ### time” from my enemies.

So the takeaways for me are;

  • $8 BILLION personal wealth – he still died at 56
  • You really can NOT take it with you – the Egyptian mommies were wrong
  • He lived a private life, loving his wife and 3+1 children the most – PRIORITIES
  • Steve Jobs was no saint. Yet he still managed to help as many people as he could
  • Apple SACKED him at aged 30 (then later re-hired him, partly by buying one of his follow up companies, NEXT). Oh the furony.

So what was so great about Steve Jobs any way?

For an outsider, like me (remember I never even spoke to him on the phone), it’s hard to know how much of a personal visionairy he was.

One thing seems true. He used the old adage (like Henry Ford) surround yourself with the best brightest people.

He also used adage 2, have an inner circle of people who are better than you, to stretch you. From reports he only had 2 close “business” friends, Larry Ellison from Oracle (he’s done ok hasn’t he) and John Lasseter from Pixar (Pixar now owned by Disney).

The main thing about Steve Jobs was something we can ALL try to emulate. His genuine PASSION for what he did. He had fun! He made sure he could present the coolest, hippest, thing. He was as proud of all the things he REJECTED as he was that he ran with. YEP he says that in the video, also on this blog – his Stanford 2005 college speech.

STAY YOUNG, STAY FOOLISH:

Here is that video [ Steve Jobs says Stay Young, Stay Foolish ]

That video is a great inspiration for me. It is real. It is about some of the problems he faced in his life, and how he over came them. I think you will feel the same when you watch it.

Reaching for our passion:

That above all is the legacy Steve jobs leaves behind him. An inspiration for us all to reach for our passion.

Nice one Steve!

What will you reach for today?
