Composers Inspiration
I guess it’s not surprising that a lot of music is composed from bad experiences. Very few songs are happy. I can’t even think of a handful. Like the newspapers, most songs are bad news; my babies left me, my cats dead, I hate you mofo, and other “charming” themes.
Even the more benile songs (I want to dance, I can dance, I am dancing, hey Mr DJ, oi this is a song this is) are more aggression release (dancing) than good news.
I’m certainly more prolific when I am depressed, or my life is going down the plug hole. So I should be able to write a song twice a day then !
Of course life gets in the way and “work” and “relationships” demand more on your time and the opportunities to compose, diminish.
So as a potential artist, it’s doubly frustrating to have the time and opportunity to write, and not taking it! Being too tired or either apathetic or uninspired being the 2 biggest issues.
I haven’t learnt to manage those 2 yet!.
I feel that apathy can be overcome by just chipping away at it; Even if it seems a chore, doesn’t appear good, or is as much fun as watching paint dry. It’s similar to when you are totally depressed and can’t even be bothered to stand up, let alone put your glad-rags on. But 1 quick cure for me, is to have a shave. (I appreciate that may be difficult for the ladies. But I assume doing your hair or make-up has an equal evil necessity role.) Forcing myself to shave, even though it seems pointless, makes me feel like part of a human being again afterwards. It’s a routine that brings you back in line.
So it’s more a discipline thing….
But if you can get in the “habit” of spending an hour or two, ultimately I feel you would turn the creative spirit around and make it more “tap-like”.
For some of you, the thought that being creative can be such an on-demand skill, may seem totally weird. And I guess it is. But I think that art is about having a feeling and expressing it. Exactly “when” you have that feeling is not important. It’s probably a sub conscious thought anyway. At some arbitrary point it comes to the fore and you have to write about it.
But you can force it t come to the fore. If you’ve written it down in a “feelings diary” (a wot) then you can just look at it, when you next have the time. People have done this naturally for ions.
You part write a song, a line, a title, a song plot, a chord sequence, a riff, a beat, etc, which you put on the back burner. it’s not a full idea yet. But one you hope you can remember later, to turn in to a full, proper evolved song. Part of your creative arsenal.
So if being creative is just having a thought, what makes an artist artistic ?
I think the short answer to that, is being able to express it. And expressing it is a “skill”. One which can be called on upon demand. A skill which needs learning, exercising, honing and continual developing.
If you think of a sculptor, what makes his art possible? I might have shapes and forms in my mind. But I can’t use a chisel to save my life. So I will never be a sculptor artist.
Well not unless I develop that skill. How could I develop that skill? By chipping away at it (pun intended – sorry).
To develop that skill, absolutely takes dedication to practice and learn and try.
To do that takes the desire, or “routine” to try.
Like any artist (i.e. an actor, singer, dancer) there are good and bad days. Days when you can perform better. Brilliantly. And even some bad days. What makes them/you an artist is that you have “tried” that day to “express”.
Sure different levels of artist come to play here, but the first dividing line between audience and artist, is that the artist is “trying” to express.
So it’s obvious why not being able to take an opportunity (the rare free time) to express, is so frustrating. But rather than be frustrated, or typing this (cough) I “should” have been chipping away at it.
I might have got in the mood and become inspired. Or at least have saved some idea or experience for later. Even if it was just one sound/patch or 2 notes or a chord, or 2 rhyming words, that I liked.
The other thing that gets in the way of creativity, is choice. Choices in music technology are huge. And the modern composer needs to deal with that as well.
But more about that later – as I feel inspired now….. Now where’s that chisel ?

No happy songs? Man the world is full of them!
