Pollyanna – The Glad Game & NLP
Here I am thinking about NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Progamming) and somehow I end up on a page about Pollyanna’s Glad Game! Oh the power of the web…
I discovered that as well as the 1913 book by Eleanor Hodgman Porter, it was also a board game from Parker Brothers released in 1915. What I find sad is that they discontinued it in the 1960’s.
I appreciate it may not have been a good seller, but it still seems a sad reflection that it was canned.
In the story Pollyanna tries to teach her town, the Glad Game. Namely people should find cause for happiness even in a disastrous situation. She found it helpful to remind her of the things that she could do, and not to worry about the things she couldn’t. IMHO very similar to the inner circle of change popularised in many self development books.
It seems to be a philosophy taught to her by her father. Apparently a missionary barrel arrived and Pollyanna was hoping for a doll. Instead it was a pair of crutches. She was disappointed of course! But her dad told her to look on the bright side. The bright side being? She didn’t need crutches any more.
Yeah OK, so maybe he should just have made her a doll out of a cloth and some twigs, but that’s parents for you
I guess the board game wouldn’t work in society today, though the inner circle philosophy is something that can help you be more content with life.
Thank you Pollyanna!
