Why Research is not work! Part 2
Why Research is not work!
OK so I thought I’d do a second post rather than edit the first. The downside of blog and ping
So if “knowledge is power” and staying ahead of your game means staying informed, how can research be bad.
I mean I need to know what my competitors are doing and what my market wants right?
In an ideal world maybe. And if your “job” was to be interesting at parties, the water cooler and board meetings. Do you go to board meetings? Do you even have a water cooler? And when was the last party you went to as you are so busy researching and working, where did you find the time? I can’t!
The point is, it is NOT an ideal world. It never will be. There is only 1 of you. Even if your company is 1200 people strong, or you outsource, or you work alone, there is only one of you. And what you contribute to your business, is UNIQUE and INVALUABLE. You can’t outsource you.
As a business owner, the main thing you “should” be contributing to your business is “vision”. But the reality probably is, you are the pin guy. The key developer. The main creative. The chief scientist. The guy who thinks stuff up. The team leader who has to explain everything to everyone and then chew their asses. The chap who has to make the tea if you want a drink yourself.
Whatever your real role is, you are the only one who can do it in your way. So your time is valuable. Even if your financial target as a company is $100,000 PA, if there is only you, that means you need to “earn” $20 per hour, every hour, with out fail.. If you fail to earn cash in one hour, you have to earn $40 in the next one. If you fail then too, that’s $60 in that next hour. And so on. So do you really have time to pontificate?
And that’s assuming you work a 100 hour week, 50 weeks of the year. And in truth, as a self employed or business owner, you probably work more than that!
If you have staff, no single employee will probably earn more than 5 times his salary. More likely 1.5 times. So you can do the maths.
Of course, a business shouldn’t be thinking in terms of man hours, but in terms of the “system”. So do you even have a system?
So where does research fit? What is the real cost of knowledge and ignorance and how can you manage it to be successful?
More later… I need to do more “research” ROFL.
(Yes I’m a flake – I’m going to make a cup of tea)
My Notes:
What is Research
What is the Answer
Why does it matter
What should you be doing instead?
When should you research?
Is there a better way to research?
How can I make my research productive, efficient?
How do I monetise my research?
What is the law of straight lines and circles?
What does {cough} mean any how ?
What proof do you have of this?
