The trouble with web hosting, is that everyone thinks they can do it. And in fact everyone can. Even a school kid can set up a reseller account for some host or other and in true Internet style “appear” to be a multi staffed data centre with 4 separate and redundant gigabit pipes to the backbone.

And that’s dandy until something doesn’t work, you have a question, or you need to do something beyond the normal.

But the bigger issue, is WHO is behind the real core and are they any good?

Hosts who should stick to brewery tours:
Many people are Fasthosts resellers. Fasthosts are one of the biggest UK hosts and IMHO from my personal experiences with them, one of the absolute worst hosts on the planet. I would not touch them with a barge pole. Even if it was 100% free, I would not use them! Yes I have that much venom for them.

Also they are not cheap. Unlimited bandwidth soon turns in to “reasonable use” policies and extra surcharges for MySQL database/storage start to creep in as soon as you want to do anything useful. And unlimited storage turns in to, but only if it is linked directly to a web page (aka a picture), so straight “file hosting” or off-line backup space, is out.

These things may change, from now when I write about them, but these are the sort of “games” Fasthsost plays. If your needs are minor, and you never need support, and you don’t mind if your site goes down, then you may get on with them fine. Good luck with that.

I’ve been hosting sites on the Internet for over 12 years now, and I’ve gone through a LOT of hosts! The bottom line is, as with all of life, every one is crap. It’s a law of averages. Everyone will muck it up wholesale at some point.

The difference is, some of us try to learn, improve and respond to those issues, and remain “contactable”, while others don’t!
Some don’t even care. If they lose 10% of their clients through neglect or abuse, they don’t care, because there is always another NEW 10% coming. Or that’s what they “think” any way…

Another huge problem with hosting is that it is highly competitive and hosts tend to offer simply unstainable deals with ridiculous amounts of storage and bandwidth and features.

One deal I had was “LIFETIME” (yes life time) free hosting of 1MB with unlimited bandwidth for a one off payment of $5. Well, that lasted 2 years and then I guess one of us died, because they went overnight with no warning and my website data with it. (Yes you see, backing up IS important! Web hosts are not your personal data stores.).

So I am delighted to have found a responsive “quality” web host.

They are not the cheapest! They do not have ridiculous offers or features. They are REAL sustainable and true figures. There are no tricks (that I have found yet anyway) and they won’t play games with you.

To date their support and responsive have been excellent and the quality of the hosting (uptime, speed, reliability) has been superb.

But do pleas ebear in mind, you need to consider what you need.

If you just want o put up simple HTML/PHP, or run a blog, then even the starter package will do you. If you wan to become your own hosting reseller, then you need to go up to the reseller PRO package to get the WHM package, which is essential AFAIC if you are serious about reselling.

But these people go all the way. Right up to dedictaed servers, which I think is partly why they work. They started at the top and worked down.
They don’t currently do VDS (virtual hosts) which is a kinder entry level (pseudo) non shared hosting package. And when you go to level 3 web presences, to run things like web3point8, you do really need dedicated resources so you can add your own features (like the Google Youube API, edit your own master php.ini to set memory and execution times, and so forth).

But this host can take you where you need to be. I’m actually so pleased to find thee people, I am stil not sure I should tell anyo one, so nobody can spoil it. But I am confident that the host can hold it’s own, so here is the hosting secret…

I have only one caveat. If your web hosting is mainly about media streaming, then you might want to consider a load balanced server instead. I have another host who do that “specifically”. They are not as good for regular stuff such as ecommerce or database, but they are focused on media streaming. Contact me, if this is your bag.

OH and why do I recomend a host, rather than jsut be a reseller myself?

For exactly the reason I mentioned in paragraph 1. My bag is not to be a host middle man. I’d rather create my own sites, than baby sit somebody elses.

One of the secrets to success is each to his own. And what the host does is hosting. What I do, isn’t Having been on the raw end of bedroom host billers, I don’t want to inflict that on any body.

Sure being a hosting reseller is an easy way to make extra money, but it comes with a real responsibility. And offering hosting is highy competitive. Which is why it so hard to find direct links with good hosts like these guys.

But if you do want to be a web host reseller, and you want to differentiate yourself above the crowd, then soon I can offer you the only web3point8 platform.
